List of 22 brands of bottled water declared ‘hazardous for consumption’

Samples of sixteen brands were found to be chemically unsafe, while six were found to be microbiologically unsafe.

On Sunday, The Pakistan Council for Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) classified 22 brands of bottled water as unsafe to human health.

According to a report issued by the committee, 22 out of 180 brands of bottled water obtained from across Pakistan from April and June this year were unsafe for human consumption.

Samples of sixteen brands were found to be chemically unsafe, while six were found to be microbiologically unsafe.

As per the report, half of the brands found unsafe were being sold in Karachi. The hazardous water contained TDS, arsenic, excessive potassium levels, and the germs of infectious diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and dysentery, hepatitis, and typhoid.

Brands such as:

  • Pure,
  • Blue Plus,
  • Sunlay,
  • Aqua King,
  • Spring Fresh Life,
  • UF Pure Edge,
  • Douro, Dropice,
  • Puricana Mineral,
  • Drops,
  • Best Natural,
  • Al Barkah Water,
  • and Koyo

All these brands were found to be unsafe due to higher levels of Sodium.

Reacting to the results, customers have uttered their concerns over the performance of Pakistan Standards & Quality Control Authority and provincial food authorities, questioning why bottled water quality was substandard despite double-checking.

Most unregistered water brands in Karachi were sold near major government hospitals, which patients also use.

Fake and unregistered water labels are also being sold in parks and recreational places, especially children.
