[VIDEO] 22-year-old woman from New Zealand talks about why she converted to Islam after the Christchurch shooting

''While the Imam recited Surah Fatiha, Meghan burst into tears.''

On the 15th of March 2019, the tragedy in New Zealand shook the whole world to its core. During the Friday prayer, a terrorist attack occurred at the Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Islamic Centre. A single gunman carried out two consecutive mass shootings, killing 51 people and injuring 40, while he live-streamed the massacre on Facebook.

The life of many, including a 22-year-old Christian woman, Meghan Lovelady, completely changed after the tragic incident.

One day, Meghan came across a gathering of families of Christchurch\\’s martyrs and heard the Imam lead the prayer. While the Imam recited Surah Fatiha, Meghan burst into tears. She said:

I could not understand a word but looking at the families reminded me of the Christchurch incident. I could not hold my tears because of the sensitization that followed the recital. I did not know how to pray, but I wanted to join them. I just stood there listening to the Imam recite Surah Fatiha, and I kept crying.

Soon after, Meghan converted to Islam.

How did Meghan Lovelady accept Islam?

Speaking to a media outlet, Meghan narrated her life story:

I was born in America, and I moved to New Zealand with my family when I was seven years old. I was never a person of faith, but I got a surge of religiousness around the age of 15-16. However, it did not stick for too long. When I was 17, my boyfriend got hit by a train in front of my eyes. This incident was absolute destruction for my mind, heart, and soul. I thought if there was a God, how could he let something like this happen to me or anyone.

Meghan continued to share:

My boyfriend\\’s death pushed me further away from faith and religion, and my life turned upside down. After the Christchurch incident, I would get off from work and walk to the mosque. I would sit there and stay there till nighttime. I learned how to pray, talked to people, and learned about Islam. I found a community that gave me peace and answers to so many questions I was looking for after my boyfriend\\’s death.

Soon Meghan accepted Islam and tried opting for a headscarf. She said:

I tried it for two weeks, and I loved it, but my friends kept asking me If I were oppressed or forced by the Muslims. I corrected them and told them that it is my choice and I love it.

You can listen to her complete story here. Reports state that after the Christchurch tragedy, many people converted to Islam. Roughly 5-6 people would come to the mosque daily to accept Islam. Many non-Muslims also visited the mosque regularly to learn about Islam. The patience of the victim\\’s families served as a source of inspiration for many new converts.
