The British royal family may seem prim and proper to the general public, but they have met their fair share of controversies over the years.

The past few generations of the royal family have been through scandals of nearly every variety, from inconvenient costume choices to explosive divorces and even an unusual abdication of the throne.

Here are some of the scandals that British royals faced over the years:

King Edward VIII Abandons the Throne

After ruling for only a few months, Edward VIII becomes the first English monarch to willingly abdicate the throne. In the 1930s, he proposed to the American divorcée Wallis Simpson — and it did not sit well with the government.

When Edward realized that he won’t be able to marry the socialite and continue in his role as king, he decided to abdicate. He was succeeded by his younger brother George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II.

 Attempted Kidnapping of Princess Anne

In 1974, a man named Ian Ball overtook Princess Anne’s vehicle when she was returning to the palace from a charity event. Operating two guns, Ball asserted that he intended to kidnap the princess and hold her for ransom. She escaped the kidnapping, but one of her bodyguards was shot amid the turmoil.

Ian was caught and pleaded guilty to attempted murder and abduction. He was sentenced to life in a high-security psychiatric facility on account of his history of mental illness.

Prince Charles’ Love Life

The Prince of Wales married Princess Diana in 1981; however, things quickly changed for the royal couple. Diana was reported admitting that she was “deeply in love with someone” who used to work in the palace, and Charles later started having an affair with his former girlfriend, Camilla.

Charles and Diana formally announced their separation in 1992. After three years, the Princess of Wales famously told the BBC that “there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”

The couple divorced in August of 1996— one year before Diana tragically died in a car crash in Paris. Charles then went on to marry Camilla in 2005.

Prince William’s Affair in 2019

Royal controversies

In 2019, the Duke of Cambridge was accused of having an affair with Rose Hanbury, a close friend of his wife, Duchess Kate Middleton. At the time, a source revealed that Kate was not happy when she heard about the “hurtful” rumors. However, all this ended up changing the couple for the better.

Megxit Saga

Megxit is an informal noun that refers to the 2020 withdrawal of Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle from royal duties.

On the 8th of January 2020, Harry and Meghan announced their decision to “step back as ‘senior’ members” of the royal family, split their time between the United Kingdom and North America, and become financially independent.

The event was dubbed as ‘Megxit’ and adopted globally on mainstream and social media.

Meghan Markle Bullying Royal Staff

Royal controversies

Earlier this year, as Harry and Meghan prepared to tell all in a televised CBS interview, a report from an international news outlet claimed that the Duchess of Sussex mistreated her royal staff members ahead of her January 2020 exit.

The report further revealed that allegations even went so far as to accuse the Duchess of Sussex of bringing her aides to tears.
