Relations between Pakistan and India have been soaring almost all the time ever since the partition of the sub-continent. The dismal state of relations hinders the mutual trade levels and people to people contact. But the relations between the two archrivals appear to be balancing as Pakistan voted in favor of India for the non-permanent membership of the UNSC.
India also endorsed Pakistan’s candidature for the slot of vice president of Economic and Social Council alongside supporting Pakistan as a member of the UNICEF’s executive board.

Afghanistan, China, Malaysia, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar are also the members of Asia Pacific Group who voted in favor of India. However, this is not the first time that India has been elected as a non-permanent member at UNSC.
Membership of UNSC
UN Security Council comprises 15 members. 5 members are permanent whereas seats for 10 non-permanent members are elected for a two-year term. Here is a video showing this year’s elected members for UNSC non-permanent membership.
The primary purpose of the UNSC is to maintain international peace and security. UN Security General votes for the selection of UNSC members for the two-year term.
The United States of America, the United Kingdom, France, Russia and the People’s Republic of China are permanent members of the UNSC. The permanent members have the veto power due to which they unilaterally drawdown from the decision taken by UNSC. The non-permanent members don’t enjoy the veto power.
Distribution of 10 non-permanent seats
These 10 non-permanent seats at UNSC are distributed on a regional basis. Of these five are allocated for African and Asian States, one for the Eastern European States, two for Latin American and Caribbean States whereas two are fixed for Western Europe.
