Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only two countries in the world that are still grappling with Polio Virus even in 2018. However, the number of reported cases have visibly and significantly reduced in the recent years.
Fight against polio in Pakistan faced many hurdles due to uncertain law and order situation, religious labels and attacks on polio workers. Hence, armed forces collaborated with the government to overcome these challenges and add more impact to the campaign not only in Tribal countries but in the entire country.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has been dedicatedly and actively working since few years in Pakistan for the elimination of polio in Pakistan and the adjoining areas of Afghanistan. Besides monetary funds, the foundation has also equipped the workers with technical support and modern training.
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced to increase the financial aid to Pakistan earlier this year. In a letter written to Minister for NHS (National Health Services), Gates lauded the government’s continued commitment towards the cause.
