6 months old disabled for life as family refuses polio vaccine
Th hoaxes have done their damage as the polio cases have seen a sudden urge once again.
Following the recent drama and conspiracies webbed around polio vaccine, Pakistan is again seeing a concerning rise in the cases of the crippling disease.
Refusing to the vaccine has cost another minor his physical mobility. A resident of Gulshan-e-Iqbal’s union council 12 has been tested positive for the virus. The investigations revealed that the affected had never administered the oral polio vaccine (OPV).
As reported by a local news source, the minor has paid the price and will continue to suffer due to his family being sceptical about the vaccine.
“Refusals caused by misinformation and propaganda against vaccination have led to another polio case in Pakistan; this time in Karachi, as a six-month-old boy, Abdul Nasir, son of Abdul Qahar, tested positive for the poliovirus” – said Umar Farooq Bullo, coordinator, Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) for Polio in Sindh.
The investigation into the case has subsequently revealed that the infant’s parents and grandmother purposefully did not let the child vaccinate.
Additionally, it was unfolded that whenever the polio team visited their home at Abul Hasan Ispahani Road, the parents sent their child away to a relative’s place. The case has alerted the authorities once again.
Hoaxes around polio vaccine: restoring public support is the challenge
Due to the ongoing baseless propaganda, attacks on medics, killing of polio workers in Balochistan and the cultivation of a biased, blind narrative on social media has lead to parents refusing to vaccinate their children once again. As a result, the number of polio cases reported across the country has now reached 17. Three cases have been reported in Sindh. Additionally, two of the cases in the province are of Karachi, while the third occurred in Larkana.
Prime Minister Imran Khan’s focal person on polio Babar Atta has shown concern over the new case and says that acquiring public support is a challenge for them, however, they are determined to conquer it.
”I have been saying it from day one & will reiterate again, Pakistan Polio Programme has already achieved Technical / Operational “Greatness”. The sole gap left is Restoring Public Trust.

After a man in Peshawar made propaganda against polio vaccine, claiming that it has adversely impacted children’s health, thousands of people across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) refused to vaccinate their children. The curse reached Sindh as well, where we have witnessed a sudden surge in cases as well.
The history behind polio wars:
From where we can put our finger on it, the conspiracy theory originally originated in Nigeria in 2003. A physician and hardline Islamist Dr Ibrahim Datti Ahmed said that polio-vaccine is a plot by the West to reduce the Muslim population and cause infertility.
By mid-2004, the theory had unfortunately plagued India. Then by 2005, 16 countries that were previously declared polio-free saw cases of polio. In 2012, the crippling disease was now only restricted to three countries – Pakistan being among them.
