‘82% of the harassment complaints filed were by female university students against their teachers’

In April 2018, a non-government organization, named Dukhtar Foundation, launched a helpline to file complaints of women harassment at the workplace.

Female harassment in Pakistan is a common occurrence in universities, as thousands of harassment cases have been reported in universities.

Teachers in the universities’ education system have unlimited authority and use their powers to exploit students, especially female ones.

In April 2018, a non-government organization, named Dukhtar Foundation, launched a helpline to file complaints of women harassment at the workplace.

Statistics revealed by Dukhtar Organization:

Complaints Received 20,741 complaints
Number of Complaints filed by University Students16,981 charges – 82% of the total
Complaints filed againstLecturers/Professors

 

The Chief Executive officer of Dukhtar Foundation, Humaira Syed, said, “The percentage of the harassment cases in public sector universities is higher as compared to the private sector universities.”

Humaira Syed further stated, “We guarantee the confidentiality of students who file complaints through our helpline and the team constitutes legal experts, journalists, psychologists and social workers.”

Data revealed by the Federal Ombudsman has shown the following Statistics:

An official of the Federal Ombudsman office has said that due to continuous awareness sessions, the harassment cases reported in 2019 doubled as compared to 2018, and a large number of them were from educational institutes.

The Vice-Chancellor at Fatima Jinnah Women University, Prof. Dr. Samina Amin Qadir, said, “The Pakistan Citizen Portal (mobile application launched by the Prime Minister to address the public issues), is the best option for the students to report such cases.”
