Afghanistan imposes duty on import of Pakistani kinnows

With the sudden increase of taxes, exports have been hampered as exporters have no other option but to sell the small-sized fruit in the domestic market at throwaway prices.

Simultaneously, the two countries are in talks for signing a preferential trade agreement, besides revising existing contracts.

In a letter sent to the Ministry of Commerce, the Pakistan Fruit & Vegetable Exporters Importers & Merchant Association (PFVA) has informed that Afghanistan has raised taxes by increasing the assessed value of kinnow from Pakistan.

Currently, Afghanistan is evaluating the value of kinnow at $272 per tonne as compared to $124 per tonne previous season, whereas the custom duty at the import stage is 30% on the Afghan side.

Pakistan Customs is currently evaluating grapes at $700 per tonne against its fair value at $450 per tonne, whereas custom duty on grapes is 10%.

The association has informed that kinnow export to Afghanistan is a lifeline for kinnow exporters as Pakistan is exporting the No-2 category and small-sized kinnows to Afghanistan, which is not exported anywhere else.

According to the association, Pakistan is importing a small number of grapes from Afghanistan, while importing grapes at their correct value will encourage Afghan Customs to correct the value of kinnow.

It has been suggested that Pakistan is also proceeding with a PTA with the neighboring country.

Taking the first step to allow grape import from fair value would encourage Afghanistan to reciprocate the move in goodwill.

  • Why sell to Afghanistan when there are plenty of other countries in the world who would buy large quantities? The Afghans are obviously working with India to try and bring Pakistan’s economy down.

  • My three brothers worked and Afghan customs such Iran,Tajikistan and Torkham border, When Afghanistan has a harvest of Pomegranate, Graphes, Apples and many more fruits this time Pakistan impose much taxes on our fruits so this is first time Afghanistan did very good against Pakistan, We have free trade area with Pakistan but unfortunately their army interrupt among us, two years ago pakistan sealed all the border for our fruits so thank Modi Sarkar he sent Airplanes cost free for Afghan businessmen to export our high quality pomegranate to India.

  • Why Pakistan even sending any kinnos too Afghanistan even of small size. Just squeeze the kinnos make the juice and sell the juice in international market at prime rates.
