After 25 years, the education department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has decided to give possession of a Hindu temple to the minority community after two and a half decade. The department has decided to shift the school, which was being run inside the temple for the last 25 years in Nowshera to a nearby location, giving the charge of the holy place to the local Hindu community.

As at the time of taking over the temple, there was no primary school in Risalpur area of Nowshera. The provincial government of that time had temporarily acquired the temple premises for six months in 1993. Which was initially meant to be six months, extended to over two decades, and a school is being run there ever since.

Groundbreaking: Pakistan Declares Historic Hindu Temple As National Heritage

Even after the request of locals and minority representatives in the National Assembly, the temple was not handed back to the community. However, in a pleasant advancement made following communiqué issued by the K-P Elementary and Secondary Education Department, the  GGPS Mandir Risalpur is being handed back to the Hindu community. The minority community will take over the charge of their temple within a month, while the school will be shifted to a nearby government school or a rented building.

Province’s Hindu community has shown joy and pleasure with the decision. Haroon Sarb Diyal, Chairman Minority Coordination Council, has termed this recent decision as ‘historic’. He assured that the temple will be used to promote religious tolerance and for educational and welfare activities as well.

Similar notification of vacating holy places affiliated with the minorities in Pakistan have been issued in the past by past governments as well, however, to little to no effect.
