As Gwadar port opens, first Afghan Trade Transit shipment to arrive on Oct 8

Three months of storage and no cargo charges will divert business to Gwadar from Dubai and Singapore ports.

On Tuesday, the Senate Standing committee on Maritime affairs was informed that the Gwadar port is ready for transit trade. According to the source, the first ship is ready to reach next week.

The officials about transshipment and transit informed sub-committee. Moreover, the Afghan Trade Transit (ATT) Module needed some amendments. All the changes have been implemented and it will be operational after initial testing.

The first shipment to reach Gwadar port on October 8. The number of trades will eventually increase.

Convener of the sub-committee Senator Kauda Babar, who is from Gwadar, highlighted the lacunas in the department of development and planning.

Singapore and Dubai ports

Singapore and Dubai ports are considered the main competitors of the Gwadar port. However, because of three months of storage capacity and no cargo demurrage charges will divert business to Gwadar.

Rules and Regulations

The committee was also notified about the status of not imposing taxe on Chinese companies who are establishing business and investment in this regard. Legal frameworks, rules, and regulations regarding fish dumping for local and foreign investors were discussed.

Senators Moula Bux Chandio and Muhammad Akram, as well as senior officers, attended the meeting from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Information Technology and Telecommunications, Gwadar Port Authority Federal Board of Revenue, PTCL and others.

Senator Babar said, “The major firms will be asked to adopt a resolution to employ the local population for jobs at such facilities.”

It was also decided that there has to be a national level policy regarding fishing trawlers and a uniform mechanism has to be formulated for all provinces, as marine fishing is conducted off the coast of Sindh as well as Baluchistan.
