In the latest Pakistan vs. South Africa, T20I, Babar Azam indeed showcased why he is the Pakistan cricket team captain. Babar Azam scored the first T20I century of his career in the match against South Africa. The cricketer helped Pakistan accomplish a comfortable nine-wicket victory with class.
Babar’s accomplishments against South Africa
The Pakistan cricket team captain took down the South African bowling attack, scoring 122 off 59 balls, registering the highest individual score earned by a Pakistani in T20Is. Babar’s score is also being recognized as the highest individual score in a run chase worldwide.
The series of achievements doesn’t end here as Babar’s century came off 49 balls, the fastest ever century done by a Pakistani batsman. Pakistanis now recognize Babar Azam as the third Pakistani batsman to score centuries in all three formats after Ahmed Shehzad and Mohammad Rizwan.
Babar’s overall T20 achievements
Looking at his overall achievements, Babar Azam has become the fastest batsman in the world to reach 18 T20I half-centuries. Babar took 48 innings to reach this landmark, surpassing Indian captain Virat Kohli, who took 50 innings to complete his 18th T20I half-century.
The Pakistan team captain beat Kohli to another record too. He scored the most runs in the first 48 innings in T20I cricket – 1,916 runs. Babar’s number surpassed Kohli’s record, who had scored 1,852 at the same stage of his career.
Babar Azam has been making Pakistan proud since 2019 by scoring the most centuries in T20 cricket. The cricketer scored five centuries over the past two years. English middle-order batsman, Dawid Malan, is next on the list with three T20 centuries.
Earlier in the day, Babar Azam was declared the number one ODI batsman in the world, ending Kohli’s four-year reign at the top of the charts.
Successes of Babar and Rizwan’s Partnership
The team captain Babar and the wicket-keeper batsman Mohammad Rizwan put on a clinical partnership in the match against South Africa. Together they scored 197 runs, the highest partnership score for Pakistan in T20Is. The previous best score was set by Mohammad Hafeez and Ahmed Shehzad with a partnership of 143 runs against Zimbabwe.
The cricketing duo’s opening partnership score against South Africa was also the highest by any team in a run chase. This was also the fourth highest partnership overall; Afghanistan cricket duo Hazratullah Zazai and Usman Ghani hold the record with a stand of 236 against Ireland.
Pakistan cricket team managed to chase down a massive target of 204 comfortably with two overs to spare and nine wickets in hand, making the T20I against South Africa Pakistan’s highest successful run chase in T20I history. The stunning cricket match has made Pakistan the first country in the world to chase down a target above 200 with only one wicket lost.
