Bahraini King and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince coming to Pakistan to hunt hourbara bustards

The Bahraini King, Hamad bin Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, and the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Zayed (MbZ) Al Nahyan.

The Bahraini King, Hamad bin Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, and the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Zayed (MbZ) Al Nahyan, will be visiting Pakistan on private trips over the next few days.

The Hourbara Bustard, the Asian Bustard.

According to diplomatic sources cited by DAWN, the two Gulf leaders are coming to Pakistan for houbara bustard hunting in Balochistan from the 22nd to the 24th of January.

Nevertheless, the two royals are unlikely to visit Islamabad during their trip.

In the past, MbZ had made stopovers in the federal capital after returning from the hunting trips.

Prime Minister Imran Khan this week had a telephone conversation with the Bahraini monarch.

Earlier this month, eleven members of the Emirati royal family arrived in the Panjgur area of Makran division to hunt houbara bustards.

Unfortunately, not the first time; this is routine.

Earlier in November, the federal government issued special permits to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS) and two other Saudi ruling family members to hunt the houbara bustards during the hunting season 2020-21.

The Governor of Tabuk, Prince Fahad bin Sultan.

One of the persons granted the permission was the Governor of Tabuk, Prince Fahad bin Sultan, despite not paying the mandatory hunting fees/dues last year (hunting season 2019-20).

Moreover, the Tabuk governor’s poaching of over 2,000 houbaras had been a subject of condemnation by the international press last year.

Furthermore, Prince Fahad had brought in 60 falcons last year; he did not pay the falcon fees — $1,000 for each falcon totaling $60,000.

The Tabuk governor’s total dues last year (hunting season 2019-20) come to $160,000.

The Asian Houbara: endangered, yet mercilessly poached.

(Pawan Singh/The National)

The Houbara bustard, also known as the Asian Houbara, is an endangered, shy bird breed – and hunting them is banned in Pakistan.

Nevertheless, Pakistan uses the bird as a “soft diplomacy” tool and routinely grants permission to the Arab royals to hunt them.

The Arab royals like to hunt Houbara bustards both as a sport and because the meat is considered an aphrodisiac.
