Coronavirus– Bergamo, a town in Italy, was one of the first severely affected areas in Europe. The images of the outbreak were a shocking insight into how lethal the pandemic was.

At one point, the Italian military arrived to carry bodies to nearby provinces because morgues in the town were overflowing. Victims were temporarily stored in churches or sealed off in the bedrooms in which they died.

There are many calls for a public inquiry into the government’s handling of the disaster. Moreover, legal action has been launched by families of the deceased.

Life after the Lockdown

Like the rest of Italy, Bergamo is out of the lockdown, but the wearing of masks is mandatory. Social distancing in local places and restaurants has been strictly observed.

Speaking to Sky News, the mayor of the town, Giorgio Gori, said, “After six months, we do not know anything about the virus. We don’t know if it’s changing, or if the viral charge is declining.”

“I say to my citizens we have to be ready to face the virus and learn how to coexist with it,” Gori said.
