The news outlet said, “Pakistan hosts the leadership of the Afghan Taliban as well as the Haqqani Network which is a key component of the Taliban, and had played an important role in facilitating direct talks among the insurgents and the U.S.”
According to the newspaper, if America leaves Afghanistan, it will openly empower the Taliban in Afghanistan, which means Pakistan’s profile in the country would bee elevated.
The editorial also stated that in future the U.S. would depend on Pakistan to shape Afghan politics.
The Indian newspaper also praised the strategy of Prime Minister Imran Khan as to how he charmed the Trump government after the Pulwama attack.
“After the Pulwama attack and the ensuing conflict between Pakistan and India, Islamabad has taken significant efforts to charm the Trump government. When the Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan visited Washington in July 2019, President Trump offered mediation between the two nations to resolve the Kashmir conflict.” The Hindu
Prime Minister Khan’s visit to the U.S. also had military dimensions. A few days before the tour, General Mark Milley, the highest-ranking officer in the U.S. military, had said America’s “interests are better served if the country sustains strong military relations with Pakistan”.
