Brazil Congresswoman and 5 of her 55 children allegedly involved in murder of her husband, who was also once her adopted son
According to reports Flordelis adopted Mr. Do Carmo in 1991 when he was 14 and she was 30.
According to media reports, a gospel singer turned celebrity politician has been accused of brutally assassinating her husband – who was once her adopted son – with the help of five of the couple’s 55 children.
About the Celebrity Politician
Flordelis dos Santos de Souza, a resident of Brazil, is a celebrity whose rags-to-riches story was documented in a popular film. She is a Brazilian Contemporary Christian singer, pastor and former member of the Chamber of Deputies representing Rio de Janeiro. However, she is currently fighting to avoid a jail sentence over the 2019 murder of her husband, Anderson do Carmo.
Recap of Flordelis and Mr. Do Carmo’s History
According to reports Flordelis adopted Mr. Do Carmo in 1991 when he was 14 and she was 30. Soon romance blossomed between the two, and they decided to marry in 1998. The two had four children together and adopted 51 more after taking pity on youth whose lives were surrounded by violence, becoming celebrities in Brazil.
The adoption strengthened Flordelis’ status as a politician and celebrity of Christian values and secured her as a powerful and popular figure within Brazil’s conservative Social Democratic Party. In the 2018 general election, she won 197,000 votes, the most achieved by a woman in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
Details of the Murder
Anderson do Carmo, 42, was discovered shot 30 times, mainly in the groin, in the garage of the family’s home in Rio de Janeiro in June 2018. His 59-year-old wife, Flordelis, claimed that he had been killed in a botched robbery, insisting that she was devastated by her husband’s death.
Flordelis’ lawyer protested his client’s innocence. Speaking to a Brazilian media outlet, he said:
My client is distraught with everything that’s happening because she is innocent. She never ordered this savage crime and has no part to play in it.
Police Investigation Unveils the Truth
Prosecutors in Rio say that they have found evidence proving that Flordelis ordered the assassination of her husband. According to the police, Flordelis tried to poison her husband six times over several months before telling several children to stage a break-in at the family home and kill him. Investigators said:
The motive behind the murder was financial and the result of a power struggle within the family. It all started when a vicious family feud unfolded between Flordelis and her husband when he stopped her from giving preferential treatment to her favorite children.
The reports claim that she wanted to kill her husband because she thought divorce was ungodly, leaving her with no choice. In a message to one of her children, Flordelis allegedly said:
What am I supposed to do? I can’t separate from him because that would scandalize the name of God.
During the investigation, the police studied Flordelis’ daughter’s internet history and uncovered search results that included “cyanide in food”. In her defense, the teenager said she was trying to help a friend who wanted advice on exterminating her dog.
Police are powerless to arrest Flordelis, but that could change soon
Recently, heavily armed police officers arrested five of Flordelis’ children and one granddaughter for their involvement in the crime. However, they were unable to detain Flordelis since she enjoys parliamentary immunity. Now police are calling on politicians to change the rules so they can arrest her.
In an official petition to the speaker of the nation’s lower house on Tuesday, Léo Motta, a right-wing congressman and former police officer, demanded that Flordelis be stripped of her term. In a document, he argued:
Given the avalanche of evidence against Congresswoman Flordelis, it is clear she cannot remain in the position to which she was elected. It’s worth stressing that the Congresswoman always sought to project the image of a Christian woman, committed to raising her adopted children and concerned about the family, while simultaneously exhibiting behavior which – if the police inquiry’s claims prove true – suggests a perverse, crime-inclined heart.
Allan Duarte, the police commissioner, said:
My investigation has proven that the Congresswoman’s image of altruism and decency was merely a ploy to gain wealth and political power.
The police officials now have evidence against Flordelis; however, only time will unveil whether she is arrested for the crime or her position in politics keeps her safe.
