Canada breaks its record of more than ten years by voting against Israel and in support of Palestinian’s right to self-determination at the UN, indicating that its stance differs from the United States.

The vote comes after the U.S. secretary of state’s claims that “Israeli settlements in the occupied territories are not, per se ‘inconsistent’ with international law”. Canada has been voting against this resolution since 2006.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s statement

Moreover, an official at Global Affairs Canada said that the vote is to express that Canada does not agree with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s statement.

The Canadian official further indicated that the vote reflects Canada’s stance on the Israeli-Palestine conflict, which is the implementation of a two-state solution with sustainable borders for both sides.

The state of Palestine, North Korea, Zimbabwe, and others submitted the resolution for “comprehensive peace settlement” to the conflict of Israel-Palestine.

However, the resolution “The right of the Palestinian people to self-determination” had seen opposition by Israel, US, and five Pacific island nations aided by the US the Marshall Islands, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia.

Pro-Israeli groups

Pro-Israeli groups showed disappointment over Canada’s decision and betrayal after the support of more than ten years.

Hillel Neuer, founding chairman of the Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy, said Trudeau is “trading Canada’s bedrock principles of fairness and equality for a UN Security Council seat,” and said it has “joined the jackals”.
