Asia Bibi, who spent years on death row after being convicted of blasphemy, has published a book about her experiences and her new life.

Asia Bibi, who belongs to the Christian minority community, was sentenced to death on blasphemy charges by a trial court in 2010 but was later acquitted in 2018. She currently lives in an undisclosed location in Canada.

Recently, Bibi has released a memoir, Enfin Libre, or Finally Free, co-written with French journalist Anne-Isabelle Tollet.

Tollet is the only reporter to have met Bibi during her stay in Canada.

In her book, Bibi describes her arrest, the conditions of the prison, and the relief of her release leading to the challenges of her new life.

Asia Bibi stated in her book, “You already know my story through the media. But you are far from understanding my daily life in prison or my new life.”

“Tears were the only companions in the cell”

Bibi further said, “I became a prisoner of fanaticism. Tears were the only companions in my cell.”

While describing the horrific conditions in Pakistani jails Bibi said, “My wrists are burning me, it is hard to breathe. My neck… is encased in an iron collar that the guard can tighten with a huge nut.”

“A long chain drags along on the filthy ground. This connects my neck to the handcuffed hand who pulls me like a dog on a lead. Deep within me, a dull fear takes me towards the depths of darkness. A lacerating fear that will never leave me,” Bibi wrote.

Denied Charges

Asia Bibi, who fervently denied the charges against her, also highlighted the problems faced by the Christian community in Pakistan.

Bibi wrote, “Even with my freedom, the climate (for Christians) does not seem to have changed and Christians can expect all kinds of reprisals. They live with this sword of Damocles over their head.”

Apart from the fact that Canada has given her life and future security, Bibi is heartbroken because she knows that she would never set foot in her homeland again.

Bibi further said, “In this unknown country, I am ready for a new departure, perhaps for a new life. But at what price? “My heart broke when I had to leave without saying goodbye to my father or other members of the family,”

“Pakistan is my country. I love my country but I am in exile forever,” she said.

  • Such shame …we saved a traitor’s life…still huge “laanat” on her face and also on those who provided any kind of aid for this shameful deed

    • Bro I firmly believe that the capital punishment should be the only option for the person who blasphem any religion not just Islam.
But it is more important to prove someone guilty rather hang him/her without proven. Everyone has right to justice.
