Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has announced to upgrade Punjab’s laboratories to ‘Bio-Safety Level (BSL) 3’ for COVID-19 tests. Currently, two new BSL-3 labs are operational in Lahore. These two labs are located in Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute (PKLI) and Jinnah Hospital.

We had announced to upgrade more of our labs to “Bio-Safety Level 3” for #COVID19 tests. As of now, two more BSL-3 labs in Lahore (Jinnah Hospital and PKLI) are operational, Alhamdulillah. 8 more labs in Divisional Headquarters will be upgraded to BSL-3 within next few days,” CM Punjab announced on Twitter.

Punjab currently has four  “BSL-3” labs in the public sector. These are:

  • Health Department
  • Nishtar Hospital Multan
  • Jinnah Hospital Lahore
  • PKLI
As announced by the CM, eight more labs in the following divisions will be upgraded:
  • Rawalpindi
  • Faisalabad
  • Lahore
  • Gujranwala
  • Bahawalpur
  • DG Khan
Biosafety level 3 (BSL3) labs are basically applicable to clinical, diagnostic, teaching, research, or production facilities where ‘work is performed with agents that can lead to potentially lethal disease through inhalation, to the personnel, and may contaminate the environment’. The upgrade would particularly assure the safety of medical and paramedical staff.
