Is the COVID-19 vaccine effective against the UK variant? Dr. Yasmin Rashid answers all questions regarding vaccine efficacy

Punjab Health Minister Dr. Yasmin Rashid recently addressed a press conference in Lahore to talk about the vaccine’s effectiveness against the Covid-19 UK variant.

Clearing all public doubts and concerns, Dr. Yasmin Rashid revealed:

Covid-19 vaccines procured from China are effective against the UK variant of the Coronavirus.

Talking about the UK variant, the Health Minister said:

The UK variant is responsible for most Covid-19 cases during the ongoing third wave of the viral infection. The Covid-19 vaccines procured from China are effective against the original strain of the Coronavirus and also offer protection against the variant that emerged from the UK.

The Minister also noted that South African and Brazilian variants of Covid-19 have also been found in Punjab. She stated that 1 case of each strain had been reported in the province so far.

Explaining the steps the government has taken to contain the virus strain, Dr. Yasmin Rashid said:

All kinds of gatherings, indoor and outdoor, and processions across Punjab have been banned by the provincial government.

Concluding the statement, the Punjab Health Minister urged people to comply with the SOPs and said:

The Coronavirus cases and positivity rate will decrease in the province only if the public cooperates with the authorities by adhering to Covid-19 SOPs.

Pakistan recorded more than two hundred Covid-19 deaths in a day for the first time since the start of the pandemic on the 27th of April 2021. The previous highest daily death count was 157, recorded on the 23rd of April.

Only around two million vaccinations have been administered in Pakistan, and the government struggles to procure supplies for the entire population. Hence, the government is looking to enforce stricter lockdowns.

Pakistani army troops have been deployed in 16 major cities with high positivity rates to assist civilian law enforcement in enforcing measures meant to curb the spread of the coronavirus, including the wearing of masks in public and the closing of non-essential businesses after 6 pm.

Now the government warns people against Eid celebrations and events. It urges people to keep their Ramadan and Eid simple this year so that Covid-19 can be fought more effectively.
