The State Bank of Pakistan took to Twitter to announce that around 303,000 people had benefitted from its relief package to extend loan repayments.

More and more borrowers are benefitting from SBP‘s relief package to extend loan principal repayments by one year. As of 24 April 2020, approximately 303,000 borrowers have been able to defer their principal payments amounting to Rs 236 billion,” SBP wrote.

The majority of the beneficiaries are small borrowers. Borrowers who wish to avail of this package are encouraged to read details of this scheme at our website and contact their bank. For details: sbp.org.pk/corona.asp”, it added.

The borrowed amount of money totaled Rs.236 billion, and a majority of the beneficiaries are small owners. Under this scheme, banks and development financial instructions will postpone payment of loans and advances for one year.

This has been done to help the borrowers amid the lockdown due to the coronavirus. However, interest payments will continue.

Postponing of the debt payment will not impact the credit history of the borrower. The official website mentioned that the total amount ‘due over the next year is about Rs.4,700 billion’.
