Digital

Pakistan is fortunate as 60% of its population is youth. Digital amenities like e-payments and internet access can open infinite doors of opportunities for the youngsters of Pakistan.

Lately, Prime Minister Imran Khan has launched a ‘Digital Pakistan vision’ that targets to increase connectivity, expand digital infrastructure, and encourage creativity and entrepreneurship.

Applicability and Implementation

Although the scheme generated a lot of excitement, there are many challenges when it comes to the applicability and implementation of the present digital policy of Pakistan.

Tania Aidrus, a senior Google executive, who left her job to head the Digital Pakistan vision, said the existing policy would be reviewed.

While talking to Dawn, Aidrus said, “To have a clear vision on a state level, we need to modify, alter, and elevate policy. We have laid out our priority areas, but we will reconsider the digital policy to position it with existing digital expansions.”

Overlapping

With the new initiative, there is a concern that it overlaps the functions of existing policy in directing Pakistan towards digitization.

The government is planning to start IT programs with the support of the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications (MoITT) to overcome challenges regarding the overlapping of digitization policies.

The State Bank of Pakistan and the Federal Board of Revenue are providing directions on monitoring policies.

The launch of the e-commerce policy is expected to launch in two to three months.
