Recently, many controversies have surrounded the Single National Curriculum (SNC) as claims were made that the books promoted gender inequality. Amongst the negative feedback there are some positive aspects that have been highlighted in the SNC.
Earlier, there was an uproar on the internet over a cover of an Urdu Book. The book showed a girl and her mother sitting on the floor while the brother and the father were sitting on the sofa.
The image caused havoc as accusations of “double standards” began making the rounds.
Moreover, girls have also been shown Playing football, Competing with boys in sporting activities, and helping their family members.
In the General Knowledge Grade 2 book, lessons have been added so that kids can learn and respect the religious festivals of minorities in Pakistan.
In the Grade 1 Urdu book a boy can be seen sitting on the floor while a girl is sitting on the sofa with her grandmother.
Unfortunately, the government, the Federal Education Minister and highly qualified SNC director, Dr. Mariam Chughtai, are becoming targets of hate and propaganda despite asking publicly for feedback and being committed to revising.
It’s not that the SNC is perfect, there are some flaws too, but it is a good attempt and a much-awaited start for nation-building.
