Drug shortages are endangering lives: More than 60 essential medicines unavailable

According to pharmaceutical manufacturers, some of the medicines are accessible because it is not feasible for them to manufacture them at the cost fixed by the Drug Regulatory Authority.

More than 60 essential medicines are not available in the markets of Pakistan.

According to pharmaceutical manufacturers, some of the medicines are accessible because it is not feasible for them to manufacture them at the cost fixed by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap).

According to the Drap official, “We used to tell companies that manufacture more than one medicine that if they make billions selling other medicines they should continue selling non-viable medicines because it would only decrease their profit, and patients would not face problems.”

The official further said that over the years, the profit of pharmaceutical companies has decreased due to which they stop manufacturing medicines. The owners of these companies have become more professional businessmen who only think about their profit.

List of 10 medicines

While talking to Dawn, the Executive Director of Pharma Bureau, Ayesha Tammy Haq said that the Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) gave a list of 18 medicines declaring they were not available in the market.

The Executive Director further said, “We have informed that many products on the list are available in the market. One product on the list is infant formula and not an essential medicine. About the rest, some products were discontinued several years ago, and Drap was informed.”
