Karachi — the City of Lights —has been listed as one of the least safe cities to live in the world.

This was revealed in the Safe Cities Index 2021 report compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

(The Economist)

The report — compiled every two years — ranks 60 major cities worldwide in terms of digital security, health, infrastructure, personal, and environmental security.

According to the report, Karachi is the second least safe city globally to live in, getting an overall score of 39.7 out of 100.

The City of Lights only managed to rank slightly above Yangon in Myanmar, which got an overall score of 39.5.

On the other hand, Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, has been ranked as the safest city in the world to reside, getting an overall score of 82.4 out of 100.

Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, is ranked as the safest city in the world.

The Scandinavian city was followed by the Canadian city of Toronto, with an overall score of 82.2, and Singapore, with an overall score of 80.7.

Also, in the top ten safest cities were Sydney (80.1), Tokyo (80), Amsterdam (79.3), Wellington (79), Hong Kong (78.6), Melbourne (78.6), and Stockholm (78).

The city of Singapore is ranked the third safest in the world.

It is pertinent to note that the ranking of EIU’s Safe Cities Index 2021 was heavily affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and all cities witnessed a slight decline in their scores.

Meanwhile, the Project Director of the EIU, Pratima Singh, said that there is a “very strong correlation between high-income countries and performance on the index.”

Sydney, Australia, is ranked the fourth safest city in the world.

Singh added that the shift in crime patterns during the pandemic has heavily affected several cities’ “personal safety” levels.

Therefore, Singh has advised the governments of “politically and economically unstable countries” to enhance their cities’ safety and security levels and “prioritize investments in infrastructure more and more.”

Tokyo, Japan, is ranked the fifth safest city in the world.

The federal and the provincial governments in charge of Karachi urgently need to look at the ever-decreasing quality of the city as it often lies at the bottom of various rankings.

Two years ago, an EIU report ranked Karachi as the fifth least livable city worldwide.

Unfortunately, this year’s EIU report ranks Karachi as the least livable city in the world.

Another recent report by the German wellbeing company VAAY has ranked Karachi as the eighth most stressful city worldwide.
