The committee carrying out the project met came together to set up modalities of the combined working.
In the month of October, the ‘Ehsaas’ Undergraduate Scholarship scheme, a primary initiative of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) and Higher Education Commission (HEC) will be launched.
On 20th September 2019, a memorandum was signed and on Thursday, the committee carrying out the project met came together to set up modalities of the combined working.
Co-chaired by Dr. Sania Nishtar, the special assistant to the Prime Minister on Social Protection and Poverty Alleviation, and Dr. Tariq Banuri, HEC Chairman, this meeting was called to mutually decide the eligibility criteria of ‘Ehsaas’ sub-project, its standard operating procedures, allocating scholarships, communication plans, and financial mechanism.
Under Article 25-A, the right to free education from age 5 to 16 years is provided. For financial help in education after that point, ‘Ehsaas’ is coming up with ‘Ehsaas’ undergraduate scholarship program. With the help of this, students that qualify for the project will be able to access undergraduate education, despite whatever the income, location or gender is. The number of scholarships given will depend entirely on the budget envelope.
“The Prime Minister has instructed that the undergraduate scheme should be launched as soon as possible. The government realizes that deprivation to education is the highest contributor in Pakistan’s national multi-dimensional poverty index’’ – said Dr. Nishtar.
