EIU ranks Karachi among the 10 least liveable cities

Karachi has been ranked among the least liveable cities of the world by the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) and this has been the matter for the consecutive years at least from the past three years consecutively. The index assesses which city provides the best or worst living conditions.
The large global cities such as London and New York scored high for culture and environment but suffered because of high crime rates and infrastructural pressures.
This time around the economic hub of Pakistan has been kept among the 10 least liveable cities and ranked at 136 on the list out of a total 140 cities according to the Global Liveability Index 2019. From this number, Karachi is the fifth least liveable city across the globe surpassing Damascus, Lagos, Dhaka, and Tripoli.
This is for the very first time that EIU Index noted the effects of climate change on liveability. “We expect problems relating to climate change to put increasing pressure on liveability scores in the coming years and now for the number of cities affected to grow,” Dawn quoted Agathe Demarais of the EIU as saying.

Caracas in Venezuela, Algiers in Algeria, Douala in Cameroon, Harare in Zimbabwe, Port Moresby in PNG are the other cities to be ranked among the least liveable besides Karachi, Damascus, Dhaka, and Libya’s Tripoli.

What are the educational, cultural, environmental and infrastructure ratings of Karachi?
Karachi’s ranking by EIU has improved by one spot in comparison to its standing on the list a year ago with its stability ranking that stands at 20, healthcare 45.8, cultural and environment 38.7, education 66.7, and infrastructure 51.8.
World’s most liveable cities
The capital city of Austria Vienna – the city, known for its convenient public transport, Alpine tap water, and cultural variety has maintained its ranking as the world’s most liveable city replacing the Australian city Melbourne which was ranked as the top liveable city for so many years. Sydney, Osaka, and Calgary followed Vienna and Melbourne.
