The end of TikTok India? The controversial video which dropped app’s rating to 2 stars

Is this the end of TikTok India?

Faizal Siddiqui, an Indian TikTok star with a massive fan following of more than 13.5 million, drew sharp criticism for posting a video that allegedly promoted acid attacks.

Following public criticism, TikTok suspended his account and the video was taken down as well. A cybercrime complaint was also filed against him for encouraging acid attacks on women.

Netizens shared his TikTok video on twitter and started calling out Siddique for promoting acid attacks demanding that he should be put behind bars. The video took the internet by storm, and  #BanTikTokIndia and #Acid became the top Twitter trends within minutes.

A TikTok spokesperson said that the content in the video violates their safety guidelines, and hence, they have taken it down and suspended the account.

”We are working with law enforcement agencies as appropriate,” they said.

The chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW) Rekha Sharma also took notice of the video and called for a complete ban on TikTok in India.

For those unaware of the controversy, Faizal shared a video, where he can be seen saying,

“ Usne tumhe chor diya? Jiske liye tumne mujhe chora tha…” and throws a liquid — purportedly acid — on a girl wearing heavy make-up that looks like burn marks.

The TikToker later shared a statement to clarify his position, saying, “I never intended to hurt anyone in any capacity. As a social media influencer, I realize my responsibility. I apologize to anyone who has been offended by the video.”

The platform faced a lot of criticism as an aftermath of this. The controversy prompted a swift response and a drastic fall from 4.5 to 2.6 stars rating on the Google Play Store.
