Facebook, National Technology Fund (IGNITE) and Pakistan’s Ministry of Information Technology launch first ever Facebook Innovation Lab in LUMS (Lahore University of Management Sciences), Pakistan.
The inauguration was set on 3rd April 2019 and was attended by several thought leaders. They all came together to talk about issues like women and technology, the impact of VR on social good and some effective ways on how technology can be used for social good.
The Facebook Innovation Lab is the first project of such nature to be launched in Pakistan. Its objectives include providing infrastructure access to entrepreneurs, developers and community groups, helping them to network, train and develop in their proficiency. It will also help developers in developing products using technologies that are in full use, like VR (Virtual Reality).
The Lab will also prove to be beneficial for start-ups or new businesses by providing facilities that will help them succeed not only in Pakistan but also internationally. Not only that, but the lab will also provide the participants with teachers and experts, and also help them connect with Facebook’s global experts, industry leaders and specialists in business growth, product innovation and data protection. The participants will be made familiar with initiatives like FbStart, a global program that helps start-ups develop and grow their businesses. And lastly, the members will be encouraged to support and connect with other developers and start-ups through Developer Circles, a community-driven program for developer collaboration.
The Facebook Innovation Lab also aims at motivating entrepreneurship and start-up growth in South Asia. In addition, the Lab will host many initiatives such as housing community events and workshop, and provide training for the start-ups.
”We are proud to launch the Facebook Innovation Lab as a part of our long term commitment to support innovation and the developer community in Pakistan. Facebook is committed to building an impactful community in Pakistan and we believe it is important to support businesses, start-ups and the individuals who are driving innovation to grow and succeed. We are confident that through our partnership with the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom, National Incubation Centre (NIC) Lahore, Ignite and LUMS, the Facebook Innovation Lab will not only be a unique training and innovation centre but will support a vibrant and transformative technology community in the country’’ – said Jason Lin, the Programme Manager, Partnerships at Facebook.
Showing his pride at the lab, Dr. Arshad Ahmad, Vice Chancellor LUMS, said:
“Innovation is the backbone of cutting edge research and quality teaching at LUMS. The Facebook Innovation Lab Pakistan provides leverage to our core offerings and enables us to achieve another level of training and mentorship – it promises to create social capital amongst young entrepreneurs that will drive their ideas with no boundaries’’
