A Telegram bot is selling Facebook user’s numbers.

Motherboard – Tech by Vice, a magazine focused on lifestyle, arts, culture, and news/politics, recently reported that a security researcher unveiled another Facebook data privacy scandal. The report reads:

A security researcher Alon Gal found out that someone has gotten their hands on a database of Facebook user’s phone numbers and is selling it via a Telegram bot.

Alon Gal took to Twitter to explain his claims. He said:

The person has access to a database with information on 533 million users, which came from a Facebook vulnerability exposed and patched in 2019.

How was the Database hacked?

Databases are usually encrypted. Therefore, to fish out useful information, a person extracting information needs to interact with the person maintaining the database. A Telegram bot solves the direct interaction problem; it can easily dig out data.

The Telegram bot is capable of doing two things:

  1. Finding the person’s phone number using his/her Facebook ID
  2. Locating the person’s Facebook ID using his/her phone number.
Another data breach affects Facebook users.

Sale and Purchase of Facebook User’s Numbers

According to the Motherboard report, accessing information like a phone number or Facebook ID costs one credit. The person behind the bot is selling one piece of information for $20. However, bulk prices such as 10,000 credits selling for $5,000 are also available.

The report further states that the bot came into action on the 12th of January 2021. However, the information being provided is two years old.

After realizing the number’s sales, Gal, the security researcher, contacted Telegram to take the bot down. However, no response has been received from their end yet.

Facebook users become prey to another data breach.

This is embarrassing news for Facebook since the social media platform collected its user’s numbers for two-factor authentication.
