A conspiracy theory that radiation from 5G towers causes the coronavirus and cancer is spreading across social media, resulting in a widespread panic about the next-generation technology.

An online petition requesting the British government to stop the 5G nationwide has so far been signed by 100,000 people, supported by celebrities sharing it with their followers.

The petition’s founder, Delroy Chin, has stated that radiation emitted from the 5G towers pulls the oxygen out of the atmosphere and interrupts the regular functioning of the human body.

Chin said, “Human bodies are 85% water, and the shortwave radiation increases the breakdown in the natural biology of the body, causing cancers and other serious health conditions.”

Symptoms of 5G exposure

“Symptoms of 5G exposure include respiratory problems, temperature, flu, fever, headaches, and pneumonia — Very much like the effects of the coronavirus, ” Chin stated.

TV personality Amanda Holden was also amongst those pushing the petition, posting it to Twitter, where she has nearly 2 million followers.

The claims have driven a warning to the British broadcasters from media regulator not to push baseless conspiracy theories, as they have “the potential to undermine people’s trust in the advice of mainstream sources of information” during the public health crisis.

Many scientists have dismissed concerns about 5th generation wireless technology. They noted that, like other cellular communications systems, 5G uses an electromagnetic waveform that emits non-ionizing radiations.

The World Health Organization has stated, “Extensive research has been done over the last two decades to assess whether mobile phones cause a possible health risk. To date, no contrary health effects have been seen as being caused by mobile phone use.”
