Faisalabad: Man kills newborn niece, says girls bring ‘bad luck’ in his family
A police official revealed that on 22nd June 2021, 15-day-old Dua Fatima had gone missing from a cradle in her house in Mohallah Mubarakpura.
Pakistan is majorly recognized as a male-dominated nation and remains a patriarchal society to this day. While women still don’t receive equal treatment, some may have at least expected the Pakistani society to move forward from female infanticide – the illegal deliberate killing of newborn female children.
However, a recent incident has proved otherwise. It seems that Pakistanis are still stuck in cultural taboos of preferring boys over girls. According to media reports, a man in Tandlianwala, Faisalabad killed his newborn niece after considering her a harbinger of bad luck.
Details of the Incident
A police official revealed that on 22nd June 2021, 15-day-old Dua Fatima had gone missing from a cradle in her house in Mohallah Mubarakpura. Her parents searched the locale in hope of finding their newborn but failed.
In desperation, the parents of Dua Fatima reported the disappearance of their young child to the police. While the police began their investigation, some locals spotted the body of a baby lying in a sewerage channel near the house of the complainant and informed the police.
After confirmation of the lifeless body of the infant by the heartbroken parents, the police shifted Dua Fatima’s corpse into custody and sent it to the mortuary for postmortem examination.
Investigation into the incident led the police to the prime suspect – Asghar, the uncle of the newborn baby. Upon suspicion, the police officials detained the man, who then confessed to the merciless murder of Dua Fatima during interrogation. A police official stated:
The suspect confessed to his crime during the interrogation, confirming that he thought girls are a bad omen for the family and bring misfortune. He (Asghar) committed the crime to stop his family from acquiring bad luck.
In a similar incident of female infanticide, on the 26th of January, the body of a newborn girl was found in the courtyard of a hospital in Dijkot. Upon investigating the incident, police officials revealed that the baby had been strangled to death. The police arrested three suspects, including a doctor and his son as prime suspects of the murder.
