PEMRA directed to ensure that channels do not ‘telecast fake news for the sake of ratings’

Javed Latif MNA directed PEMRA's chairman to participate in the meeting and explain their reasons

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) was directed by the National Assembly Standing on Information and Broadcasting to develop a plan to make sure fake news would not be broadcast on electronic media only for the sake of ratings.

The mechanism will include the protection of members of the society, as well as legislators.

Committee meeting:

Javed Latif MNA led the committee meeting and claimed that specific channels telecast fake news only to increase their ratings. The Committee observed that no action was taken against the channels and expressed their displeasure over the situation.

The Committee also disagreed with PEMRA’s notification of imposing a ban on the ARY News program `Off the Record` without consulting or giving a fair chance to its management. The ban was later removed, which created a bad image of PEMRA and its reliability.

PEMRA’s Chairman to attend the meeting:

Javed Latif MNA directed PEMRA’s chairman to participate in the meeting and explain their reasons and course of action.

The Committee also raised issues related to the feature film `Zindagi Tamasha` and discussed it in detail. According to the Secretary for Information Akbar Hussain Durrani, the Censor Board had approved the film for release twice, but now a third party had filed an application.

The meeting was attended by MNAs, Syed Aminul Haq, Usman Tarakai, Maiza Hameed, Aftab Jehangir, Naz Baloch, Tahir Iqbal, and Saima Nadeem.
