Cybersecurity experts from Canada have identified a fake version of WhatsApp circulating on the internet. The phony version was reportedly developed by an Italian surveillance company, Cy4Gate, specifically to target iPhone users.

Last week, a US-based network security firm named ZecOps reported attacks against iPhone users. Following this, the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto collaborated with Motherboard and found the instant messaging application’s fake version.

The software tricks iPhone users into installing specific configuration files on their mobiles, which transfers all of their data to the hackers.

A spokesperson for WhatsApp condemned the act and has guaranteed to take action against the fake version.

He said, “We strongly oppose abuse from spyware companies, regardless of their customers. Modifying WhatsApp to harm others violates our terms of service.”

The spokesperson added, “To help keep chats safe, we advise that people download WhatsApp from the app store for their phone’s platform.”
