Riyadh: Falcon sale sets a record for the most expensive sale ever – $170,000!
When seeking hunting opportunities during colder months in Pakistan, Morocco, and the central Asian region, falcon owners always bring their prized possessions (birds) along.
On Tuesday, a young falcon was sold for more than $170,000 in Saudi Arabia. This amount marks the most expensive sale ever of this bird type and the costliest purchase ever at the annual 45-day falcon auction.
The Saudi Falcon Club, organizers of the auction, said:
The bird was sold on Tuesday for 650,000 Saudi riyals by virtue of its unique characteristics and scarcity.
According to the club, the falcon was a young Shaheen breed, a type of peregrine falcon. The auction organizers regard this falcon\’s sale as the most expensive sale globally for this bird type.
It should be noted that Falconry is an essential part of the cultural desert heritage in Saudi Arabia and neighboring countries. The act of displaying, buying, and selling falcons dates back to a thousand years in the specified region.
Another prominent tradition of falcon owners in the Gulf is to travel with their birds inside their plane cabins. When seeking hunting opportunities during colder months in Pakistan, Morocco, and the central Asian region, falcon owners always bring their prized possessions (birds) along.
