Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan, who is also representing the governing party in the capacity of Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting, made a joke that people are finding hard to digest. Social media users were shocked and disgusted over PM aide’s insensitive and thoughtless remarks about the earthquake that hit Pakistan yesterday.

The earthquake of 5.2-magnitude severely affected Pakistan, particularly Punjab and Azad Kashmir. The epicenter of the earthquake was Mirpur, a small city located 22 kilometers (14 miles) north of Jhelum. Not only did it leave psychological effects, but the earthquake also claimed 19 lives and left 300 injured in the Kashmir region.

The earthquake tore open car-sized cracks into roads and heavily damaged infrastructure. The viral photos showed wide cracks at least four feet (1.2 meters) deep, filled with water from nearby canals. In Sahankikri, located on the outskirts of Mirpur, almost 400 houses have been damaged.

“I will never forget the horrible sound,” a resident of the village, Muhammad Ramzan, told AFP. “It looked like the entire village tossed and turned and spun around.”

“We… were sitting having a gossip when suddenly the earthquake shook us all. Fortunately, the wall collapsed the other way, burying one of our buffalo,” 23 years old student said.

However, Firdous Ashiq Awan found it ‘funny’:

Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan was speaking at the National Institute of Information Technology in Islamabad. She was asked to comment on the calamity. However, her comments caused outrage. Rather than understanding the magnitude of the destruction, she was seen mocking and trivializing the situation.

“This is a sign that when tabdeeli (change) comes even the ground becomes restless…so this is a sign of change”, she commented.

She went on adding “even the ground has shaken as it has not come to term with this tabdeeli”.

Following her controversial remarks, the social media community is asking for her resignation.
