France Shuts Down 73 Mosques and Islamic Schools to Combat ‘Extremism’

According to Darmanin, at least 12 of these closures took place in September.

About 73 mosques and Islamic schools have been closed across France since the beginning of the year to combat “radical Islam,” the French Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin revealed on Tuesday.

According to Darmanin, at least 12 of these closures took place in September.

Among the places targeted by the authorities are “an undeclared mosque, an Islamic cultural and associative establishment, a non-contract Islamic school, five shops, and four drinking outlets.”

If this list is authentic, the fact remains that these structures’ having an affiliation to “radical Islam” remains questionable, and even wholly unfounded.

Darmanin also affirmed that a “clandestine school” was closed in Bobigny (Paris region) at the beginning of October.

However, the “clandestine school” turned out to be a mosque that offered religious and Arabic language courses.

Moreover, Darmanin revealed that several drinking outlets were closed because of their alleged connection to “radical Islam.”

Interestingly, these outlets sold alcohol, the consumption of which is forbidden in Islam.

The Minister also pleaded for the expulsion of hundreds of foreign nationals from France.

“We must expel 231 foreigners from French territory, who are residing here illegally, and are being pursued on charges of extremism, including 180 in prison,” he said.

Earlier this month, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed that Islam is in a ‘crisis’ worldwide.

“Islam is a religion that is in big crisis worldwide today; we do not just see this in our country,” Macron said.

He announced that the authorities would present a bill in December to strengthen a 1905 law that officially separated the church and the state, also known as laïcité, in France.

Macron said the measures were aimed at addressing the problem of growing “Islamic radicalization” in France and improving “our ability to live together.”
