Prime Minister Imran Khan will represent his country as a co-convener at the GRF (Global Refugee Forum), the first big meeting on the refugees in the 21st century. The meeting will be held in Geneva, Switzerland on December 17th and 18th.

Both the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Government of Switzerland will together host GRF.

This meeting will also be co-convened by Germany, Ethiopia, Costa Rica, Turkey, and Pakistan. Secretary-general of the United Nations and head of states from all co-convening countries will attend the event.

This two-day global meeting is the first gathering at the ministerial level, in which the practical implementation of the Global Compact on Refugees will be discussed.

In 2018, the UN’s General Assembly confirmed the Global Compact on Refugees GCR) after the consultation, led by UNHCR for two years, with member states, refugees, civil society, experts, private sector and international organizations.

The GCR gives a ‘blueprint’ or plan to governments, organizations and other stakeholders on how to treat the refugees, and ensure that they get the support they need to lead productive lives.

The blueprint proposed by GCR has four key points, which include easing pressure on host countries, enhancing the self-reliance of refugees, supporting them in their countries of origin so, they can return home with safety and lastly, expansion of access to third-world solutions.

Qaiser Khan Afridi, the UNHCR’s spokesperson in Pakistan, revealed that as co-conveners of the world meeting on refugees, Pakistan along with Turkey, Germany, Ethiopia, and Costa Rica will be given a new opportunity to come up with concrete pledges and contributions to make a long-term difference in the lives of not only refugees but the communities that host them.

He further stated that UNHCR and Pakistani authorities, and governments of Iran and Afghanistan will also initiate a support platform, that will include international solidarity for sustainable solutions for Afghan refugees.

Solution Strategy for Afghan Refugees (SSAR) Support Platform will seek political and financial support at GRF to achieve results.
