Government shuts down media cell for ‘countering fake news’ due to lack of funds
It was establishes 6 months ago.
After six months of setting up the social media cell for countering fake news, the federal government had to shut it down. The purpose of setting up the social media cell was to tackle fake news and spread verified information across social media.
However, the federal government, at the Press Information Department (PID), had to shut down the cell and fire employees without any notice because of the lack of funds.
For the past two months, the employees of the cell had not been paid salaries. Sources claim that it was likely that PTI volunteers will be tasked to operate the government’s social media cell.
