Government to impose heavy tax on graphics cards

The Pakistani government has decided to increase the tax on graphics cards. Despite graphics cards being at their lowest price in the last two years, matters will get worse in the country.

Due to the decreasing demand for graphics cards and the cryptocurrency crash, there has been a global shortage of GPUs. Because of this, companies are selling their products at original price tags to clear out stocks before launching new cards.

Government to impose taxes on graphics cards

While the GPU market has recovered, for the most part, Pakistan is still increasing the rates of the products and they will only go up from here.

Pakistan Customs and the government has just added taxes and duties on the import of graphics cards. There was no official valuation ruling on GPUs by Pakistan Customs prior to this, but now heavy taxes will be imposed. These will vary by the VRAM capacity of a GPU.

  • 24 GB = $542
  • 16 GB = $468
  • 12 GB = $382
  • 10 GB = $262
  • 8 GB = $198
  • 6 GB = $98
  • 4 GB = $65

In order to calculate the taxes, the total assessed value of a card is multiplied by 36% and then multiplied by the current USD exchange rate.

Pakistan Customs has also confiscated 700 RTX graphics cards, which have been locked up for more than 60 days in their warehouses. The authorities have also imposed heavy fines of as much as Rs4 million on local distributors.

To sum it all up, graphics cards in Pakistan will continue to get expensive in the future and the situation will not improve anytime soon.
