Current Superannuation age

The current superannuation age of civil servants is 60 years. There is room for an increase in the age of retirement keeping in view the average life expectancy in the country. Prime Minister instructed the said ministry to complete the proceedings within days. According to the Express Tribune sources within the Ministry of Finance told that the premier’s directions cannot be implemented within the given period of two days as there was the need to study the implications for increasing the age of retirement.

What does the constitution say?

Any due change in the retirement age limit would require the amendment in the Civil Service Act of 1973. Unluckily, the incumbent government of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf does not possess majority seats in the upper house of the parliament to pass any bill. The majority of the seats in the Senate are filled by the PPP Senators.

The opinion of the critics

The critics of the proposal say that this would further increase the unemployment in the country due to the ever growing young population. According to the National Human Development report, the rate of unemployment in Pakistan is already scourging and is up to 9.1 percent. This is not for the first time that the government has floated the idea of increasing the age limit for civil servants. Earlier, the PPP Government reviewed the same possibility but the idea didn’t sit well to many.

What is the possibility for the PTI government to implement the proposal for increasing the age limit of civil servants?
