Govt. aims to end artificial fuel shortages forever by automating petrol pumps. Here’s how
An automatic petrol pump system will help streamline the fuel supply countrywide.
The Petroleum Division has tasked acclaimed energy and technology experts to carry out a technical assessment to automate the petroleum sector. After the evaluation, an automation system will be developed to enable real-time data recording of the petrol division unit’s daily sales.
In the next few weeks, the technical assessment will be completed, after which the development and deployment of the automation system will begin. Automating more than 9,000 oil depots and petrol pumps across the country will take a few months.
An automatic petrol pump system will help streamline the fuel supply countrywide. The oil sector will become self-sufficient and will help Pakistan save billions on its annual petroleum import bill.
The government is currently working on a multi-pronged strategy to revamp the country’s oil and gas sector. According to a senior Petroleum Division official, the plan focuses on ensuring an uninterrupted supply of fuel across Pakistan by recording timely data and increasing the technical and professional capacity of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA).
The Petroleum Division has drafted a bill that will allow the government to legally record the oil depots and petrol pumps’ daily sales. Once signed into law, the oil depots and petrol pumps will have to follow procedures as any refusal will allow the authorities to seal and revoke the disputing units’ licenses.
The official said:
The government will not condone the attitude of Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) from now on and will put an end to the issue of fuel shortage once and for all. Fuel hoarding would not be tolerated. Considerable action would be taken against the OMCs that curtail petrol pumps’ supply whenever the oil prices are reduced and start their routine business after the petroleum prices surge to make a quick buck.
