The Pakistani government has announced a new program that will make it easier for citizens to purchase and access smartphones.
Under this new program, smartphones that are worth as much as one lac rupees will be given to citizens on easy installment plans. While speaking at an event, titled ‘Smartphone for All,’ the Federal Minister for Information Technology Amin Ul Haq, remarked that people will get a smartphone after simply paying 20% to 30%.
Smartphone for All Scheme
The minister further added that there is no need for paperwork to get the smartphones on installments, and the facility will be available on only ID cards. Under the Smartphone for All scheme, phones worth Rs10,000 to Rs1 lac will be given in installments of 3 months to 12 months. However, in case an individual is unable to pay the installments, then the phone will be locked and won’t be made available for access anywhere in the world.
The aim of this scheme is to make smartphones accessible to the public and bring businessmen towards e-commerce. While the program may seem promising, a set date for an official launch is yet to be announced. We may see more such projects launched pretty soon, as according to the minister, 70 projects are in process, all of which facilitate connectivity. All of these projects are worth a collective Rs65 billion.
Minister Amin Ul Haq further added that in the past, no government had thought of manufacturing local smartphones, but now, there are 29 companies doing so in Pakistan.
