The Gujranwala Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI) has expressed its enthusiasm to operate a cargo train commercially between Karachi and Gujranwala.

The business community has also offered to pay the freight/rent with profit in advance for one year.

This is to prevent burdening Pakistan Railways (PR), which is already outsourcing the commercial management of loss-making trains.

The GCCI also seeks to ink an accord on a lease basis to develop the freight/cargo terminal of the city’s central railway station as a dry port to carry containers shipping goods for export and import purposes.

It is pertinent to note that around 500 containers move between Karachi and Gujranwala daily through the road link.

However, Gujranwala is not connected with a motorway with any city.

Consequently, the GCCI has also requested the Punjab government to allocate ₨. 3 billion to build a 16-kilometer long link road to join with the Sialkot-Lahore motorway (M-11).

The GCCI President, Umar Ashraf Mughal, said that the chamber’s proposal had already received approval from the Chief Minister of Punjab, Usman Buzdar.

Meanwhile, Mughal informed that the GCCI had held a meeting with the Federal Minister for Railways, Azam Khan Swati, and addressed the matter of starting a cargo train between Karachi and Gujranwala.

A follow-up conference was held with the Deputy Superintendent Railways of Lahore after which a joint inspection was made at the freight terminal of the Gujranwala Railway Station.

During the inspection, it was discovered that the station was spacious and feasible for the commercial cargo train that can grow the business.

It is pertinent to note that the GCCI had initially planned to launch the freight train from Wazirabad Junction Railway Station as it was placed in the center of the golden triangle districts: Gujranwala, Gujrat, and Sialkot.

Nevertheless, the freight terminal was found to be inadequate compared to the scope of the Gujranwala station’s terminal.
