According to the Hajj Ministry, pilgrims had undergone COVID-19 tests before arriving in Mecca. They were asked to wear masks and maintain social distance at all times. Attendees were also given elaborate amenity kits that included sterilized pebbles for the ritual stoning of the Devil (rami), disinfectant, masks, and a prayer rug.
Initially, Saudi authorities said only 1,000 pilgrims residing in the country would be allowed to perform Hajj. However, local media later reported that around 10,000 hajjis would be allowed to take part.
Moreover, 70 percent of the pilgrims are foreigners living in Saudi Arabia, while the rest are Saudi nationals.
