Has Former DG ISI Zaheer-ul-Islam Joined PTI?
Former PM Imran Khan and his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has been getting lots of support from retired Pakistan army officers.
Recently, a demonstration was held outside the National Press Club in Islamabad by the Veterans of Pakistan. They demanded immediate elections, formation of a Judicial Commission to probe the foreign conspiracy behind the vote of no-confidence against Imran Khan and the resignation of Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah.
Now, former head of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) – retired Lt Gen Zaheer-ul-Islam – has also extended his support to PTI candidate Col (r) Shabbir Awan in PP7 Rawalpindi by-polls. The pictures on social media show him address a “gathering of influentials at his house.”
After the pictures went viral, many wondered whether the former DG ISI Zaheer-ul-Islam has joined PTI. However, Fawad Chaudhry has denied all the speculations regarding the former military officer.
Talking to a local media outlet, the PTI leader stated that the rumours on social media are not true. He added that the former DG ISI just expressed his support for their party’s candidate, who is also his relative.
It should be noted that Zaheer-ul-Islam served as the ISI chief from 2012 to 2014. He was accused of being the main backer of 2014 PTI sit-in outside the parliament.
