HEC may be revising the Ph.D. admission policy. Here are the new terms

Reports further state that the HEC has abolished the requirement of having a previous qualification in the same discipline in order to apply for a specific Ph.D. program.

HEC revised the Ph.D. admission policy.

Recent reports state that the Higher Education Commission (HEC) has revised its policy for Ph.D. admissions. According to sources, the HEC took the decision on the 1st of January 2021. However, the authorities have made no official announcement of the policy yet.

The revised HEC Ph.D. Admissions policy states:

Students can apply for Ph.D. programs directly after the four-year BS programs. The minimum duration of a Ph.D. degree will be three years, while the maximum duration of the degree will be eight years.

HEC revised Ph.D. policy is garnering mixed reviews.

Reports further state that the HEC has abolished the requirement of having a previous qualification in the same discipline in order to apply for a specific Ph.D. program.

According to reports, in case of non-implementation or violation of the policy, HEC would take action against universities, which may include: 

  • warnings
  • suspension
  • revocation of NOC for admissions
  • non-verification of credentials
HEC Ph.D. revised policy has not been announced yet.

It is pertinent to mention that the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA) has expressed serious concerns over the HEC’s revised policy. Reports state that the Association has rejected the HEC’s revised Ph.D. policy.
