Here’s everything you need to know about HEC’s latest PhD policy

Under the new policy, the requirement for an MS and MPhil for doctoral studies has been removed.

PhD requirement

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has introduced a new Ph.D. policy across Pakistan, as per which a person can now apply for a Ph.D. after 16 years of education.

Under the new policy, the requirement for an MS and MPhil for doctoral studies has been removed.

The HEC Chairman, Tariq Banuri, said the new policy would be effective from the 1st of January 2021.

The policy will not fully be applied to already enroll Ph.D. students in universities; however, alumni may benefit from some policy sections.

Moreover, for the first time in Pakistan’s history, this policy has removed the requirement for doctoral students to pursue a Ph.D. in their own discipline.

The doors of an MPhil leading to Ph.D. for students are kept closed. However, MS/MPhil degrees can be obtained based on required qualifications.

Ph.D. students are also prohibited from leaving their home country for at least two years.

According to the notification, the requirement to send Ph.D. dissertations to foreign experts for review will also be removed. Students will now be allowed to send these for review to Pakistani academicians.

  • Thanks God, M.Phil only happens in Pakistan and India. One can get admission in PhD after 4 years Bachelor degree or a mAster degree in UK, USA, Germany etc.

    M.Phil is a useless now a days.

    Well done.
