Here is why #PIALootingPakStudents is trending on Twitter

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has raised the prices of one way ticket from Pakistan to China. The amount has been increased exponentially to Rs500,000, which is out of budget for Pakistani students studying in China.

Airfares for other airlines have also been hiked and range from Rs.500,000 to Rs.800,000 for one-way ticket. Students are the most impacted due to this surge in ticket fares. The increase has been a result of the coronavirus restrictions that are in effect in China.

The issue has caused an outrage on the internet. Local media outlets have also talked about the problem. #PIALootingPakStudents is trending on Twitter after the affected students used the platform to highlight the problem.

A member of Pak-China shed light on the topic. Dr. Asmat Malik mentioned that a five-hour direct flight from China to Pakistan costs Rs. 130,000. On the other hand, the same flight from Pakistan to China on Boeing 777 costs Rs. 550,000.

She has urged the Minister of Aviation, Khawaja Saad Rafique and PIA’s CEO, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Amir Hayat to explain the disparities in airfares.

Students are urging the public to show support in this regard. They are also requesting people to email media channels to talk about the issue.
