In a shocking report released by HRW (Human Rights Watch) today, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Bhartiya Gau Rakshak Dal is accused of setting the trend of mob culture and attacking minorities particularly.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has urged India to take action against the vigilante ‘cow protection’ groups for attacking Muslims, Dalits and other minorities in the five years since the Hindu nationalist BJP came to power.

The report revealed shocking facts that between May 2015 and December 2018 at least 44 people, including 36 Muslims, have been killed in attacks over beef consumption. The HRW said that it is need of the hour that authorities take action against those involved in the attacks and also stops blaming the victims or justifying the oppressive attacks in the name of protection of religious sentiments.

“According to a survey by New Delhi Television, there was a nearly 500% increase in the use of communally divisive language in speeches by elected leaders – 90% of them from the BJP – between 2014 and 2018, as compared to the five years before the BJP came to power” –  the report, released on today said.

90% among these cases were reported after BJP came in power. A senior officer in Rajasthan reported that no action is taken against them as they are given political protection. He said that in these cases, inquiries are initiated, then procedures are ignored and they are let off.
”Police face political pressure to sympathize with cow protectors and do a weak investigation and let them go free” – he said, as reported by HRW.
However, South Asia director at Human Rights Watch, Meenakshi Ganguly said that it has become a way to attract Hindu votes.
“Calls for cow protection may have started out as a way to attract Hindu votes, but it has transformed into a free pass for mobs to violently attack and kill minority group members” – she said.
