On Thursday, after receiving the President’s assent the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) became a law, due to which protests erupted in different cities. The bill alters The Citizenship Act 1955. It makes only Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and Christian, etc from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, eligible for the citizenship of India, while Muslims are the only community to be eliminated.
